Political science meets linguistics: analysis shows how the Green party has changed the language of economic debates

An article in The Conversation by Geoff Ford (Digital Humanities / Political Science), Bronwyn Hayward (Political Science) and Kevin Watson (Linguistics) explains how the Greens have changed the political conversation in NZ’s parliament by questioning the major parties’ focus on “growing the economy” and linking economy and environment.

The article draws on Geoff’s PhD research that used 57 million words spoken in parliament between 2003 and 2016 to analyse political rhetoric about the economy.
