Exhibition: Paemanu: Tauraka Toi – A Landing Place

Paemanu: Tauraka Toi – A Landing Place

Dunedin Public Art Gallery, 11 December 2021 – 25 April 2022.

Bringing together Kāi Tahu artists from across the country, Tauraka Toi embodies our kaupapa to use contemporary art to cultivate a vibrant Kāi Tahu visual culture for future generations.

This exhibition signals the beginning of the Paemanu art collection – an independent kohika toi that will be cared for through our partnership with Dunedin Public Art Gallery.

This is an important moment for Paemanu, creating a strong anchor for contemporary Kāi Tahu visual art within this institution.

Our journey began with mana whenua and the placing of kōhatu in the gallery foyer. In the collection show Hurahia ana kā Whetū which opened in June, Ross Hemera and Cath Brown, the advance party, set the scene for our arrival, Paemanu: Tauraka Toi.

This exhibition has been co-curated by a team of senior Kāi Tahu contemporary artists and Paemanu trustees – Areta Wilkinson, Ayesha Green, Lonnie Hutchinson, Martin Awa Clarke Langdon, Nathan Pōhio, Peter Robinson, Rachael Rakena, Rongomaiaia Te Whaiti, Ross Hemera, Simon Kaan, Kiri Jarden and Vicki Lenihan.
