The First Forty Years: The Early Canterbury Historical Associations, 1922-62

History seminar, Tuesday 10 May, 6pm in A6 Arts Lecture Theatre and via Zoom https://canterbury.zoom.us/j/91722980928, Passcode: 638388.

The Canterbury Historical Association is now one of the oldest surviving historical associations in New Zealand, and the sole survivor of the university-based historical societies of the 1930s.

Geoff Rice has been trawling Papers Past in search of reports of meetings to add detail to the minute books, and has made some interesting discoveries.

A Japanese student at Lincoln College spoke to the association in 1934, and after the Second World War established the Japan-New Zealand Friendship Society, which still exists.

The roll-call of speakers includes some very interesting individuals who later achieved great distinction.  This talk is a preview of the first part of the history Geoff is writing about the CHA.

Emeritus Professor Geoff Rice was Secretary of the Canterbury Historical Association from 1982 to 2007.  He ended his long career at Canterbury University as Professor and Head of Department.

In 2021 he was appointed ONZM for services to historical research and tertiary education.

This paper will be offered simultaneously via ZOOM. It will be re-broadcast on PlainsFM (21 May 9-10pm), where it will also be offered as a podcast.
