CIUC’s Paint-A-Beijing Opera Mask Online Facebook Competition

From the end of April to the start of May, CIUC were thrilled to host our latest online competition: Paint-A-Beijing Opera Mask.

A revival of 2021’s ‘Paint-A-Panda’ competition, the introduction of the Beijing Opera Mask proved to be just as popular with a total of 165 submissions received from 13 different schools around the country.

Artworks received ranged from Junior students still in Primary School, all the way through to Senior students in their final years of High School.

Impressed by the volume and quality of submissions received, the CIUC team then categorised the entries into either ‘Traditional’ or ‘Non-Traditional’ based on the style demonstrated by the student with their Masks.

113 submissions were entered under the Traditional Category, with the remaining 52 entered under the Non-Traditional Category.

After being uploaded to Facebook on Tuesday 26th April, public voting remained open on all Masks until Monday 9th May. Voting was conducting through monitoring the number of ‘likes’ on each post.

A total of 617 votes and 29 comments were made across the Traditional Category, and 524 votes and 57 comments made across the Non-Traditional Category throughout the competition, with students rallying behind their, or their classmates’ masterpieces.

On Tuesday 10th May, CIUC were pleased to announce the winners.

Finishing with a massive 152 votes, Karl Buenaventura from Christchurch Boys High School took out First Place in the Traditional Category, with Charlie Bailey (also of Christchurch Boys High) coming in Second Place with a total of 51 votes.

In the Non-Traditional Category it was ultimately Tessa Scott of Chisnallwood Intermediate School who won First Place with 88 votes, with her creative and colourful design.

Two prizes were also awarded to individuals for their positive ‘Best Comments’ left on student’s artworks.

CIUC would like to thank all students and teachers who took part in our Paint-A-Beijing Opera Mask competition, and look forward to holding more online events on our Facebook page again later in the year.
