Biography:

 The ambassadors diplomatic career began in 1994-1997 when he joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Anglo-Irish Division as a Third Secretary. Peter served with the International Fund for Ireland, of which New Zealand is a member, to support the promotion of reconciliation on the island of Ireland.

Peter’s first posting was to the Embassy of Ireland in Tokyo, Japan (1997-2000), he then moved to Seoul, Korea where he served as Deputy Head of Mission from 2000-02, before returning to the Bilateral Economic Relations Division (2002-2004) in Dublin.

In 2004, Peter was seconded to the Embassy of Ireland, Singapore by the Department of Communications with a regional remit before being appointed on secondment to the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF), Singapore where he served as Director of Intellectual Exchange from 2006-2009. During this time, he led the Human Rights, Environment, EU Through the Eyes of Asia and other Asia and Europe-wide programmes as well as initiating the first Asia-Europe Pandemic Response Project.

Peter served at HQ in the Political Division between 2009-2011, as Deputy Consul General, New York from 2011-2014 and more recently as Consul General, Hong Kong 2014 – August 2018.

Peter has served as Ireland’s first resident Ambassador to New Zealand since August 2018.  He presented his credentials as Ambassador of Ireland to Samoa in October 2019.
