Green Doves and Dancing Stars: Olivier Messiaen’s “Harawi”, Sunday 9 October, 2pm

Olivier Messiaen’s Harawi is a sumptuous epic for soprano and piano. The first in Messiaen’s “Tristan Trilogy”, Harawi is an ecstatic dive into Andean folk music and a surrealist, colourful exploration of love and death. It is seldom performed live in its entirety, due to the virtuosic challenges to the performers, and Wellington-based musicians Barbara Paterson and Gabriela Glapska have gleefully stepped up to this challenge. By turns earthy and sublime, delicate and volcanic, Harawi is extraordinary music theatre, showcasing two of Aotearoa’s most musically and dramatically exacting performers.

Serenades, celebrating a decade, Sunday 20 November, 2pm

After what can only be described as a watershed decade in the history of Ōtautahi Christchurch, the Christchurch Youth Choir has grown and flourished. And most importantly, they haven’t stopped singing! This celebratory concert, inspired by our journey and that of the Christchurch community, will feature selected new compositions by young (or young-at-heart!) Ōtautahi composers, including Big Sing Māori Composition Competition winner Estella Wallace, At the World’s Edge Festival’s 2022 Emerging Composer Eva Bedggood, Amelia Hill, and Theo Hnat. You can also expect to enjoy some wonderful popular items from Rosa Elliot, Richard Oswin, and many others.
