EU Diplomat Launches Student Research Hub at the Media and Communication Department

Kevin O’Connell, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the EU to New Zealand and Political Counsellor, met with the members of the Student Research Hub within the framework of the Political Communication and Public Diplomacy Forum (led by Professor Natalia Chaban at the Department of Media and Communication) and launched a new research collaboration on August 18. The PD-PCF Student Research Hub will collaborate with Delegation of the EU to New Zealand in the study of the EU’s digital diplomacy towards New Zealand as a tool for strategic communication and relation building.

Cross-Departmental Research Seminar at the Media and Communication Department

Media and Communication PhD student Georgia Williams, awarded the UC Aho Hīnātore | UC Accelerator Scholarship in 2021 and supervised by Dr Zita Joyce, presented her Accelerator Project “An upstream approach to supporting young adult mental wellness through a communication lens” and its key results at the weekly Research Seminar at the Department of Media and Communication on August 17.  The Seminar was also attended by the members of the interdisciplinary Community and Urban Resilience Research Cluster, of which Dr Joyce is a member, building connections around resilience and mental health communication. Georgia’s accelerator project was cosupervised by Dr Kaaren Mathias of the UC Critical health and wellbeing research group.

MStratCom Students of Public Diplomacy Meet with an EU Diplomat

Department of Media and Communication hosted Kevin O’Connell, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to New Zealand and Political Counsellor on August 18. The diplomat was a guest speaker in MStratCom course Public Diplomacy where he presented on public diplomacy of the EU and shared his professional insights into the role of communicators in diplomacy and international affairs.
