Chinese Language week

We had such a fantastic New Zealand Chinese Language week this year. Going into local libraries around Christchurch and integrating with the public was awesome.

This year, we visited libraries in Shirley, Halswell, Hornby and Bishopdale. While there, we taught people how to write Chinese characters and gave them a Chinese name based on their English names. We also explained the meaning of each character, its origin, where it came from and its progression in changing form. This was an exciting activity, especially as people of all ages could get involved.

It was great fun to teach New Zealanders a part of the Chinese culture, and we hope this will inspire more people to try to learn Chinese and be interested in Chinese culture. We look forward to next year’s Chinese language week and hope that even more people can get involved around the Christchurch Community Libraries.
