Barrel dwellers and emperor challengers: ancient philosophy for all ages with the Teece Museum

Thu 7 Jul 6:30pm – 8:00pm

Te Ara Ātea, 56 Tennyson Street, Rolleston 7614, New Zealand

For the ancient Greeks, philosophy was seen as a ‘way of life’ which involved putting ideas into action – whether by insulting Alexander the Great or starting a garden commune.

This talk by Brylea Hollinshead (UC Teece Museum) will introduce you to the views of four Hellenistic schools of philosophy and the eccentric lives of their leaders, via an overview of Brylea’s recently produced resource for children, Sophia and the Philosophy Club Competition. Come along to learn how ancient ideas remain relevant today and the importance of philosophy for helping us all – both young and old – lead good lives.

Brylea Hollinshead is currently a Philosophy Honours student at the University of Canterbury and will soon be commencing her Philosophy Masters at Central European University. Her research interests lie in ancient ethics and philosophy of emotion. In 2021, she completed an internship at the UC Teece Museum of Classical Antitquities and authored Sophia and the Philosophy Club Competition, a Hellenistic philosophy resource booklet for children. She is also co-author of ‘Ways of Life as Modes of Presentation’ (2021), published in the academic journal Human Affairs.
