History PhD student begins year’s research at Oxford

Safe travels to History PhD student, Kate Pickworth, who set off on Thursday for the UK, where she will spend a year undertaking research towards her PhD at the University of Oxford. Kate is the last holder of the Edward Gibbon Wakefield Scholarship in its current form, which has allowed several Humanities PhD candidates to spend a year at Oxford as part of a UC PhD. Her thesis, ‘Female Propagandists in First World War Britain’ considers the under-explored role of women as propagandists during the war through case studies of several individuals, including the New Zealander, Maud Pember Reeves, whose pre-war activism led to her contributing to war savings and Ministry of Food propaganda. Kate’s year in Oxford will dramatically increase her available source material. While supervision continues to be overseen by her UC supervisors, she will also receive the help of her Academic Advisor at Oxford, Professor Santanu Das – a leading international authority on First World War literature. We look forward to seeing the results of her work!
