Open Christchurch 2023 – Chemical Laboratory walkthrough : 6 & 7 May 2023

Saturday 6 May and Sunday 7 May, 11am-3pm;  UC Arts city campus and UC Teece Museum, 3 Hereford St, CHCH

One of the University of Canterbury’s most enduring and well-loved contributions to the local architectural landscape is the collection of heritage buildings that were its former home, on the site that is now the Arts Centre of Christchurch. Nowadays, the bulk of UC is based in Ilam, but the University still maintains a beating heart in the centre city with its UC Arts city campus based in the former Chemical Laboratory in the Arts Centre. Originally home to the Department of Chemistry, 150 years later the building is now the base for the UC Teece Museum, Department of Classics, and School of Music.

This year, as part of Open Christchurch 2023, we invite the community to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the University of Canterbury by exploring behind the scenes in one of its most beloved buildings. Take this opportunity to walk through the building, try to decipher the Latin quote in the foyer, peek into the Teece Museum, and climb the stairs to view a mini-exhibition in the Attic.
