A Solid Foundation: celebrating 150 years of UC in the City

Saturday 6 May and Sunday 7 May, 11am-3pm; Camerata Room, UC Arts city campus, 3 Hereford St, CHCH

Constructed between 1908-1910 and designed by Collins and Harmon to match the gothic revival style of the earlier Canterbury College buildings, the Chemical Laboratory was a showcase of innovation and elegance, purpose-built to work as a functioning research laboratory.

As part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of UC, ‘A Solid Foundation’ will explore the history behind the Chemical Laboratory, its architecture, construction, and use by generations of teachers and students. This mini-exhibition developed just for Open Christchurch will feature original archives, photographs and architectural drawings from the renowned Macmillan Brown Library collections, alongside equipment used by staff and students of the Department of Chemistry.
