Conor Clarke (Ngāi Tahu – Ngāti Kurī) and Joy Auckram (Ngāti Maniapoto) collaborated on eight new lightbox works as part of Tīrama Mai. These are shown alongside newly commissioned artworks by Ngāi Tahu creatives Rachael Rakena, Turumeke Harrington and Hōhua Kurene. You can find their works in front of Te Pae on Oxford Terrace.

“This collaboration followed a chance meeting at a weaving wānanga at Rāpaki Marae. In it, we reflect on the ebb and flow of loss, love, sorrow and joy. The mōteatea Hine-te-iwaiwa by Nuki Tākao was recited daily throughout our making-process, guiding and grounding our response to life experiences. We recommend reading or listening in via QR code while viewing the works. Mauri ora!”

Conor Clarke (Ngāi Tahu – Ngāti Kurī, Irish, Welsh) grew up in Tāmaki Makaurau and is currently a Lecturer in Photography and Masters candidate at Ilam School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury. She is a te reo Māori student at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, and is working towards a collaborative exhibition about land, vision and tipping points in mid-August, 2023 at Jonathan Smart Gallery, Ōtautahi.

Joy Auckram (Ngāti Maniapoto, Tauiwi) grew up in Ōtepoti before relocating to Ōtautahi where she learned raranga under Emma McLean, and is currently studying Toi Ataata (Visual Arts) under Rāwiri Horne at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
