Journalism Education Association NZ (JEANZ) Conference 2023

UC’s Media and Communication department hosted the annual Journalism Education Association NZ (JEANZ) conference earlier in September, with a cross-sector workshop focused on the challenges and opportunities for journalism education in a rapidly changing media landscape.

The talanoa-styled summit, held at the Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora, brought together journalism academics from Aotearoa and Australia with representatives from news media and related agencies, high school media teachers and journalism students.

Discussion traversed topics related to diversity and equity in our newsrooms and classrooms, mis- and disinformation, AI and trust, the nature and viability of journalism education, hauora (health and wellbeing), safety and trauma, and recruitment, retention and careers in journalism.

Attendees agreed to key action points to explore and set up initiatives aimed at further cross-sector collaboration between news media, journalism schools and the National Association of Media Educators, including establishing an advisory panel, piloting a national summit and network of regional cross-sector groups, and setting up a multi-sector communication channel through which to connect, collaborate and share resources.
