Cantemos juntos / Kia waiata tahi tātou

As part of their outreach projects, the Spanish Programme of the University of Canterbury invited all the schools in New Zealand that teach Spanish to participate in the Karaoke competition Cantemos juntos / Kia waiata tahi tātou and sing Bailan (Kotahitanga) by Oriana Setz featuring Jake Kīanō Skinner), a beautiful song with lyrics in Spanish and Te reo Māori created last year by the artist and a team of talented musicians, professionals and students from UC, as part of a collaborative project carried out with the support from the University of Canterbury Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha. This song celebrates diversity and togetherness, and honours the cultural exchange between Māori culture of Aotearoa New Zealand and Hispanic people and cultures, and it featured on the Spanish Dance Video Project 2022.

A number of schools participated in this year’s Karaoke competition and sent their videos featuring their students singing to this wonderful song. There were great prizes for the first three places donated by Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excelence (LatAm CAPE), Tui Tuia I Learning Circle, and Spanish Teachers Association of NZ (STANZA).

It is awesome to watch these videos and witness the enthusiasm and positive energy with which Spanish teachers in New Zealand share their knowledge and passion for the Spanish language and the Hispanic culture with their students, and how these students enjoy so much their learning experience!

Please watch these videos when you have some moments to relax. We are sure they will put a smile on your face J
