Nick Smith recently published a peer reviewed journal article in the Hague Journal of Diplomacy (Q1 Scopus journal) titled ‘From Positive to Negative Historical Statecraft: The Shifting Use of History in China’s Diplomacy’.
The article looks at China’s increasing use of “negative history” in its diplomatic signalling. By looking at 20 years of Chinese MFA press conferences, a sharp increase in the evocation of negative histories was observed, which contrasts with the typical focus on more positive histories (when engaging diplomatically).
