This weekend, the UC Gamelan Ensemble led by Associate Professor Justin DeHart will travel to Wellington to perform at Te Papa. This event marks 50 years since the first gamelan instruments arrived in New Zealand. In 1995, the School of Music at the University of Canterbury purchased two sets of Balinese gamelan instruments (Gong Kebyar and Gender Wayang) made by I Wayan Redana, the gong-smith from Klungkung, Bali. Groups from Dunedin and Wellington will be in attendance and will collaborate on a shared composition at the end of the day. More details can be found here.
