12th Annual NCEA Japanese Workshop Draws 400 Students

The Japanese Programme and Canterbury Network of Teachers of Japanese successfully hosted their 12th annual NCEA Japanese Workshop on 4th of June, welcoming 400 secondary students from 14 Canterbury schools.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Catherine Moran officially welcomed the students, alongside distinguished guests Mr Ken Nakamura, Director of the Consular Office of Japan, and Ms Chisato Yoshioka, National Language Advisor for Tui Tuia Learning Circle, Auckland.

Designed to promote Japanese language education and build a collaborative learning community, the workshop offered targeted activities focused on NCEA assessments. Students engaged in three intensive language sessions with support from 24 UC students who served as teaching assistants and mentors.

A highlight was a Tuakana-teina session where Year 13 students interviewed UC students in Japanese, exploring their motivations and strategies for language learning.

The workshop concluded with an energetic collaborative dance performance to the popular Japanese song PiPPA!
