Navigating sociocultural boundaries: Advancing inclusion in the workplace

4:15pm, 3 October, Elsie Locke 104A | Zoom ID: 915 6910 8999

Our daily interactional routines at work are continually impacted by societal narratives about who belongs and who does not. Existing investigations of discrimination recognise that bias is both overt and covert, conscious and unconscious, bold and invidious. Language is a core vehicle in these messages. In order to successfully negotiate symbolic gatekeeping events (e.g., job interviews) and be accepted as ‘one of us’ at work, professionals need to be linguistically competent and socioculturally proficient in a) the varieties that make up the linguistic ecosystem of a professional setting and b) relevant dominant societal ideologies.

In this seminar we provide a synthesis of our previous work in the field of language in the workplace, covering different geographical contexts and professional domains. Our findings are consistent; the negotiation of workplace access cannot be studied outside the context of the powerful ideologies to which different societies and groups subscribe.
