Abstract: Deep-sea mining (DSM) is often presented by its proponents as offering a novel frontier capable of delivering critical minerals needed for the green transition, while others have voiced concerns abouts its potential environmental and social impacts. This talk will present the findings of a corpus-assisted discourse study (CADS) of the activities of corporate actors and international NGOs working in this sector. Drawing on the just transition literature, we highlight how this discursive struggle holds distinct implications for Pacific Island Countries (PICs), who are now having to decide whether to embark on the DSM venture.
