Spanish lecturer’s research on gamified language learning

On the 20th August, Sergio Esteban Redondo presented some of his research at the EUROCALL conference (European Computer Assisted Language Learning).

As part of the symposium on MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) his presentation via zoom was on gamified and multimodal immersive scenarios in foreign language learning: CLIL video tasks.

It explores through a mixed method research project, the design and implementation of multimodal video tasks prompted by CLIL and the Multiple Intelligence Theory under the Octalysis gamified umbrella as an immersive scenario for language learning.

Since opportunities for foreign language production are very limited in New Zealand there is a need for practice outside the classroom. This piece of research delves into the implications of an immersive and gamified set of video tasks across B1 and B2 levels of the Spanish programme at the University of Canterbury.

From the data obtained through the questionnaire which was passed to students, results indicate that learners favoured these gamified CLIL video tasks in terms of enjoyment, immersion and learning potential over any other form of assessment in spite of them being time-consuming and demanding.
