Bachelor of Communication Students and Germany’s Science Diplomacy

Two teams of 3rd-year Bachelor of Communication students (COMS330) have been selected to work with German diplomats to co-develop communication strategies for their science diplomacy initiative. Joshua Meredith, Connor Johnston, Elias Redpath, Leah Hills, Madeleine Barrett and Ruby Riley developed and presented their original social media campaign to the Embassies of Germany and won the challenge selected by the diplomats.  The campaign communicates the HALO (High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft) project, which provides pressing knowledge about the relation between aerosols and clouds in the southern hemisphere.  A joint collaboration between German scientists and their international colleagues (including from the UC), this project aims to  extrapolate its findings to a larger scale using satellite data and global climate modelling.

On September 28, the Embassy of Germany invited the winning team of our students to visit the research aircraft in its hangar in Christchurch and meet with the research team. The winning student team contributed further to the social media campaign of the HALO South mission.

COMS 330 is coordinated by Dr Tara Ross and the Global Communication module, in which students collaborated with embassies, is led by Prof Natalia Chaban.
